Mullein is a versatile herb that has a long history of traditional use for a wide range of respiratory disorders, to speed up wound healing, to ease rheumatic pain and for haemorrhoids and ear infections.
Mullein is most definitely the Lung plant, and has been used for thousands of years to treat all things that effect the lungs: cough, whooping cough, croup, tuberculosis, bronchitis, hoarseness, pneumonia, and allergies. Gerard’s Herbal, written in1597, recommends both the flowers and leaves of the mullein, boiled in wine, as a remedy for all diseases of the lungs. It is also well known in ancient and modern times as a treatment for colds, sore throats, flu, fever, tonsillitis, and especially for ear infections.
Mullein is a natural expectorant, which makes it effective in alleviating conditions such as bronchitis, dry hacking coughs, whooping cough, colds, flu and sinusitis. Mullein also has anti-viral properties, adding to its effectiveness against flu, colds and other viruses, and it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties helps to treat sore muscles and joints, and soothes burns and haemorrhoids. One of mulleins best known properties is it’s ability to treat ear infections, and mullein oil has been used for this for thousands of years.
